PS5 Review

*Disclaimer: I was sent the code for this game on PS5 in return for a review; all opinions are mine and mine alone.

You may think this is dejavu but believe me, you're wrong, yes I recently reviewed the Gas Station version of this game, which is basically the same concept, but in this instant we are in a Supermarket which is far bigger and cooler to explore, don't you think? Well, I do! As I already knew that this version of the game would involve more due to the size, I was a tad worried over whether or not I would miss anything I needed to do now that I started my new nighttime job here. I was given a general idea of what needed to be done on the wall of the store room via notes, now it was the task of getting to know the layout and where everything was.

Notice board that lets players know what needs doing

I would say I spent around 20 minutes finding light switches, looking at what doors I could and couldn't open, and most of all paying attention, going back and forth to the toilets to try and find out how the cleaning mechanism worked and whether or not I would need cleaning solutions. I quickly found out that the game was causing me motion sickness, so I adjusted the sensitivity and moved around as slowly as possible without getting annoyed with myself. I've not come across a game in a little while that has done this to me, so be aware if you're also sensitive to movement in games.

The controls are very easy and simple to use, so you won't be met with any frustration unless you wheel the cleaning trolley at a weird angle and get yourself stuck behind it like I did, and I spent ages trying to get unstuck. Some tasks can be annoying, for example, 6 out of 8 toilet stools needed toilet paper. This means bringing the cleaning trolley closer to the door, then going back and forth and grabbing each one individually in each stool. I don't know about anyone else, but when we restock our toilet roll, we hold a bunch in our hands and arms for both upstairs and downstairs toilets. It was such a daunting job.

I guess if you also hate games that repeat and feel like a constant loop, this one will also annoy you. I quite liked it; it was very mundane and low effort once you get to grips with what needed to be done. I think this is the kind of job at a supermarket I could cope with, no humans around, just me quietly getting on with what needs to be done, although there are some run-ins with people, a crazy woman decided to make me chase her around the store and out of it for some unknown, creepy reason. It did make me laugh, though.

day 3 on the job

The game as a whole is simplistic, with some added humour. You get told off if you don't do the job correctly; that's also the norm in the real world, except they don't jump out on you once you leave to tell you off, do they? I would say my favourite jobs to do were going around and closing the fridges and freezers, what kind of annoying individual thought it would be funny to open them in the first place, if they break down, it won't be convenient, will it now? The added benefit of there being a new problem or something to do each shift you undertake made me want to find out what more there could possibly be, some evenings there was nothing that needed to be done at all except for the sign being turned and lights turned off. If you don't remember to do those simple tasks, you're in trouble! I highly recommend Before Exit :Supermarket for some chill time.
