Friday 3 March 2017

The advent of smart technology has brought forth a multitude of security devices and features. Some of them present software platforms that are keeping cyber threats at bay, while others assume physical form and guard our homes vigilantly. This empowers us to take security to a whole new level, although it should be noted that threats are becoming more sophisticated as well.

Credit cards

Security breaches associated with credit cards raise many eyebrows. EMV cards are more secure, but this technology still needs to be more widely implemented. Until then, users can adhere to best practices.  First off, utilize a credit card instead of a debit one, whenever you can as they offer more protection from frauds. Furthermore, it is advisable to sign rather than key in your PIN, and keep a close eye on your statements. Finally, disable automatic transfers to linked accounts. This allows you to wipe out your accounts in case they get compromised.

Mobile phones

A plenty of mobile devices get stolen every day and a ton of private data ends up in the wrong hands.  Therefore, update your software to close as much security loopholes as possible. Use a more secure lock screen, preferably a full alphanumeric password. Install mobile antivirus software for some added security. Keep the location setting enabled or employ a GPS tracking device to get your precious device back should you lose it. There are many other apps and programs that transform your mobile phone into an ultimate security tool.

Cameras and security systems

Cameras may not always turn the criminals away, but they make it easier to catch them. Although some people claim that even fake cameras do the trick as a deterrent, it is best to purchase a real, high-definition recording device with low-light capabilities. Tech marvels like Ring Video Doorbell come in handy as well, especially as an addition to the video surveillance. They replace your existing doorbell with Wi-Fi speakers and a camera, using motion sensors to capture anyone approaching your front door.

Luminous illusion

One of the best tricks to boost the security of your home is to make it seem like someone is always present. People used to take advantage of holiday light timers, but now we have cutting-edge tools at our disposal. Namely, dedicated apps let you program your lights to turn off and on according to custom patterns. This will keep the burglars at bay, who will not risk breaking into a seemingly occupied home. Likewise, use products, such as Phillip Hue smart lights to simulate a TV being watched or to produce similar results.

Lock, stock, and barrel

Smart locks are paragons of home security: These smartphone-enabled devices they take place or regular deadbolts and make forced entry a rocket science. Moreover, users can monitor who is coming in and out, and allow or deny access remotely.  Most locks are also able to detect your presence automatically via Bluetooth and open the doors for you. Finally, some of the best smart locks out there are integrated with home automation systems and effectively communicate with a host via other devices.

Safe and sound

As technology advances by leaps and bounds, consumers are blessed with an ever growing number of security tools. It pays off to take a holistic approach and stay on top of best practices both in a digital and “real world”. Bear in mind that being smart and cautious when wandering the highways and byways of the complex modern reality is just as important as having smart devices to watch over you.
