We live in an age where it's still dangerous to go out alone at night which is shocking, predators are always going to be on the lookout for victims and this is something that society has learned to live with, we are given advice on how to stay safe and told if we can avoid it don't go out on your own and stay in groups. To me this is worrying mostly due to the fact that even in 2019 attacks, murders, abductions etc are still something that is a daily occurrence and that people have had to develop tech to try and help you when faced with a situation like this, I don't like writing things like this but when I came across this gadget I wanted to share my thoughts about it and help others acknowledge that such a device exists.
When I used to travel on public transport or get a taxi I would always let someone know where I was and where I was going, I myself was robbed at knifepoint in the girls toilets, I was minding my own business and the boy who was pushing his bike alongside me moments before I went to the toilet had followed me in so that he could rob me, in the women's toilets, a place I never thought was unsafe until that moment happened. A time before this whilst travelling home a man sat next to me (I was sat by the window on the bus so he was blocking me in) he started to rub my leg and I looked at him and said can you stop, he didn't, so I pushed him out of the way and went to the back doors which weren't far from my seat. The bus had stopped in the traffic so I pressed the emergency door open button and got off that bus as fast as I could, no way was I staying on the bus near him I just needed to get away.
Some may think I was ridiculous for pressing that button but when you feel unsafe you tend to try and remove yourself from the situation you were in and so that's how I felt and that's what I did, no one of ANY gender should feel unsafe when they're out and about, their own home or any other place for that matter and this is why the App-Elles app and SOS bracelet is such a good idea, it's packed full of features to make anyone using it feel safe as shown in the image below which you can also find HERE.
What I like most about the bracelet is that there is a discreet button you can push for 4 seconds when you're in trouble and connects wirelessly to the Bluetooth on your phone. Often we are too scared to get our phones out when we are faced with a scary situation so being able to have a discreet option to help you and alert others can be comforting in a way. The SOS bracelet looks like a normal fitness band so no one would be none the wiser as to what it was, they come in a variety of colours so you can choose whichever one you prefer. As far as I know, they're only available to order from a French website but they do ship, they're around £21 but with shipping will cost around £30 which is still very reasonable, to buy when click HERE. Unfortunately this app is only available on Android but hopefully one day it will be in the Apple store but the App-Elles app is free to download from there.
The woman to thank for coming up with the idea for this app and bracelet is Diariata N’Diaye, she has been raising awareness for women and girls that are victims of abuse for 10 years now and in 2015 founded her charity Resonates and developed the app App-Elles to help women and girls who are victims of violence. The whole concept is wonderful and will help a lot of women who are victims of violence, knowing that what has gone on is being recoded and sent to the witnesses of their choice can give victims peace of mind that they have something in place to use as evidence. If you would like more information about App-Elles head on over to the website HERE, I also want to just say I wasn't asked to write about this I actually came across it randomly one day and thought it was an amazing little gadget and app, this bracelet and app can be a game changer.
